Three Generations, One Desert Sunset: A Phoenix Family Portrait Story at South Mountain Preserve
Some sessions stop me in my tracks before I even pick up my camera.
This was one of them.
A family from out of town, visiting their son who is studying here in Phoenix, reached out through Airbnb Experiences looking for something a little more meaningful than tourist photos. They wanted real. They wanted the desert. They wanted each other.
What they got was something even better than they imagined.
When the Desert Becomes the Background for Your Family Story
South Mountain Preserve is one of those locations that just does the work for you. As one of the largest municipal parks in the entire United States, it stretches across more than 16,000 acres of Sonoran Desert landscape right inside the Phoenix city limits. The saguaro cacti, the rocky ridgelines, the warm golden light that only the Arizona desert can produce, it all creates a backdrop that is impossible to replicate in a studio.
For this session, we had three generations together in one place, grandparents, parents, and a college student son who calls Phoenix home. The grandparents had traveled to see where their grandson was building his life. And somewhere between the trail dust and the setting sun, we made photographs that will outlast all of us.
That is what family portrait photography is really about.
Why South Mountain Preserve Is a Perfect Phoenix Portrait Location
If you are searching for a Phoenix family photographer who knows this city's outdoor spaces, South Mountain is one of my absolute favorite spots to work. Here is why it photographs so beautifully:
The light. Phoenix light is different from anywhere else in the country. During golden hour, the desert glows in amber and rose tones that make skin look incredible and give every photo a warmth that feels almost cinematic.
The texture. Desert landscapes give portraits depth. The rocky outcroppings, the native plants, the wide open sky, they create layered backgrounds that feel expansive without competing with your family.
The meaning. For families visiting a student or a child who has relocated to the Phoenix area, South Mountain is a landmark. It is iconic Arizona. It tells the story of the place your person chose to build their life.
The accessibility. Despite being one of the largest parks in the city, South Mountain has multiple trailheads and overlooks that are easy to reach, which matters when you are working with multiple generations and want everyone comfortable.
A Multigenerational Phoenix Family Portrait Session
Grandparents traveled to Phoenix to visit their grandson, a college student building his life in the desert.
When I work with multigenerational families, my approach is a little different than a standard session. I am thinking about three things at once: comfort, connection, and storytelling.
Comfort means making sure grandparents are not hiking a difficult trail in heeled sandals. It means finding shade when the Arizona sun gets intense. It means working at a pace that lets everyone relax rather than rush.
Connection means giving the family moments together that feel natural rather than posed. Some of the best photographs from this session happened between the formal groupings, when the grandson was walking between his grandparents, or when his parents pulled him into a hug that nobody planned.
Storytelling means capturing the whole picture. Not just the perfect smiles, but the looks between people who love each other. The grandmother's hand on her grandson's face. The way a father looks at his child, even when that child is now taller than he is.
Phoenix Family Portrait Photography: What Makes These Sessions Special
I have been photographing families for over 20 years, and what I know with certainty is this: the photographs you will treasure most are not the perfectly posed ones.
They are the ones where something real happened.
For this family, that moment came near the end of our session. The light was going golden, the desert had cooled just slightly, and the three generations stood together on a rocky overlook looking out over Phoenix. Nobody told them to look at each other. They just did.
That photograph is going on a wall somewhere. And in 30 years, when the grandson has his own family, he will point to it and tell the story of the evening his family came to see where he had built his life.
