A Flying Dress Session at The Wave: My Bucket List Adventure at North Coyote Buttes

A Flying Dress Session at The Wave: My Bucket List Adventure

Some places live on your bucket list for years before you ever get to see them in person. For me, The Wave was one of those places. So when I finally won a permit through the lottery and got the chance to hike out to North Coyote Buttes with my camera in hand, it felt almost surreal. What followed was one of the most incredible photography experiences of my life, complete with a flying dress session against some of the most epic scenery on the planet.

If you love adventure photoshoots, dream of a flying dress session in a once in a lifetime location, or you are simply curious about what it takes to photograph The Wave, pull up a chair. This one was special.

What Is The Wave at North Coyote Buttes?

The Wave is a surreal sandstone formation tucked away in the Coyote Buttes North area of the Vermilion Cliffs, near the Arizona and Utah border. Its swirling waves of red, orange, and cream colored rock look almost painted, like the desert froze mid motion. It is one of the most photographed natural wonders in the world, and yet very few people ever get to stand there in person.

That is because access is strictly limited. The Bureau of Land Management only allows a small number of permits each day through a competitive lottery, which protects the fragile landscape. Winning one of those permits is part of what makes the experience so rare and so meaningful.

Winning the Permit and Making the Hike

Getting to The Wave is not a casual stroll. It is a challenging, unmarked hike across open desert, slickrock, and sand, with no signs to guide you and very little shade. You carry everything you need, navigate by landmarks, and earn every single step. By the time the rock walls finally opened up in front of me, the payoff was overwhelming.

I will be honest, hauling camera gear across that terrain is no small feat. But standing in the middle of that formation, knowing how few people ever get the chance, made every ounce of effort worth it. This was a true bucket list moment, and I did not want to waste a second of the light.

Capturing a Flying Dress Session in an Epic Location

There is a reason flying dress sessions have become so popular. A long, flowing dress catching the wind against a dramatic backdrop creates pure movement and magic, and there is no backdrop quite like The Wave. The sweeping lines of the rock, the rich desert color, and that sense of vast open space made every frame feel cinematic.

While I was out there, I had the joy of photographing a couple of fellow hikers as part of our shared experience. There is something powerful about strangers becoming part of your story in a place like that, all of us a little awestruck, all of us grateful to be standing somewhere so few people ever reach. Those candid, adventurous portraits are some of my favorites from the entire trip.

Why Adventure Photoshoots Are Worth It

Adventure photoshoots are about more than pretty pictures. They are about the experience of getting there, the challenge of the journey, and the memory of standing somewhere extraordinary. The images become proof of something you accomplished, not just somewhere you posed. A flying dress session in a location like this is the kind of thing you remember for the rest of your life.

You do not have to be a professional model or a hardcore athlete to love this kind of session. You just need a sense of adventure and a willingness to chase something epic. I handle the rest, from guiding your movement with the dress to finding the light that makes the location sing.

Dreaming of Your Own Adventure or Flying Dress Session?

The Wave is a rare and protected place, and visits there depend on winning the lottery permit, so it is not a session I can book on demand. But if you are chasing that same sense of wonder, Arizona is full of jaw dropping locations perfect for flying dress and adventure photoshoots, from slot canyons and red rock to wide desert vistas. If you do happen to win a Wave permit and want to talk about capturing it, I would absolutely love to hear from you.
