Military night with the Sioux Falls Skyforce

IMG_1192

One of the most amazing parts of my job is the people I get to meet.  I do some work for the Skyforce, and when they asked me to photograph their military night I didn't hesitate. My husband was Airborne in the Army, my brother in law is getting ready to serve his second tour in Afganistan, and countless friends and family are military. Of course I would photograph their military night. When I got there, it was explained to me that a special ceremony would be happening at half time. I asked a few questions and just went on with the night. I did not realize that I would be photographing one of only two living recipients of the Congressional Medal of Honor, the highest honor bestowed in the military. The Congressional Medal of honor is given to those who distinguish themselves through "conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity at the risk of his or her life above and beyond the call of duty while engaged in an action against an enemy of the United States." It's a very, very big deal.

Governor Dennis Dugaard would be presenting Sergeant First Class Leroy Petry an award. Also, dozens of brand new recruits would be sworn into duty.

Sgt. Petry was injured in Afganistan in 2008. This is the story he told on David Letterman. Watch this and meet a true hero.

This link will take you to the Army website that shows diagrams and a great explanation of the events.  Sgt. Petry

There really are not words to describe the awesomeness of this event.  Thank you to the men and women of our military.

My poor neglected blog.

I'm not sure what to do with this thing much anymore. Facebook seems to have taken over the world and there I am, posting on FB and neglecting my old friend here. I've been writing on this blog since 2005. Unfortunately, my archives do not go back so far due to a server crash, but I have been faithfully updating this blog with photos for almost seven years. Ahh... well, new posts are coming. :) Stay tuned!

Brand New Outlook on Life...

John and Laura (Klemann) Hunt Benefit

Semi vs. Pickup and a brand new outlook on life...

On March 2, 2010 the day started out early in the ER in Eagle Butte with John and Laura's daughter Jessa. Her 2nd bout of pnemonia this year and her Daddy's history of respiratory issues landed her in an ambulance ride with Mommy to the ER in Pierre to be admitted. John's job - of course - check on son Collin at school, coordinate taking care of him, and rounding up needed items at the ranch for an extended stay in Pierre. A passionate, dedicated father trying to make it to Pierre...

John was trapped in his pickup for an hour after a collision with a semi at 55 mph. The paramedic on scene immediately called for the flight team and rescuers worked to get him out. John was airlifted to Sioux Falls and then from there transported to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, MN. John has had numerous surgeries on his arm, shoulder, elbow, hip and jaw. After 30 days at Rochester, John was able to make it back to Eagle Butte to recover. John has many hours and days of recovery ahead of him, including additional surgeries to repair the damage to his arm, shoulder and elbow.

Please help support John and his family on his road to recovery.

New Location! New look! Loving life!

We have been working our butts off that last couple weeks getting our new place ready. We have been squished into our old spot for a year, and though we hated to go through another move, it had to be done. We just needed the space! Check out our awesome special below and get your buns in to check it out! We will give you a personal tour and show you all the new space. A very, very special thank you to my husband Dwayne who did all the painting and spent several nights and days moving stuff over for me and helping to get it all in order so quickly. I love you!

Beauty and the Beast :: Pierre Players

I had the pleasure of photographing the cast and crew for the Pierre Players production of Beauty and the Beast. Last night me and my family went to the production. I was really excited to attend, and was not disappointed. I feel so proud of my little hometown theatre and I didn't have anything to do with the production, just took some headshots. The cast did a really good job, and if you have the opportunity to go see it DO! Here are a few of my favorites from last night...
